Capel Tabernacl

Where Christmas Evans preached

example

The finest surviving Classical style chapel in Cardiff, Grade 2* listed, in the heart of the city. Tabernacl (a tent, later, a place of assembly) began in 1813, but the present building dates from 1865, by J.Hartland & Son. Famous Welsh preacher Christmas Evans was here, one-eyed and 7 feet tall, drawing crowds from miles around. Impressive west front, with arched doorways surmounted by 4 large round-headed windows between Corinthian pilasters. Inside a vast space seats over 900; huge sweeping gallery, massive organ above Deacons Set Fawr (Big Seat) and Baptismal pool. Handsome coffered ceiling with central rose. Striking stained glass in west windows, in memory of Rev'd Charles Davies, showing Baptism and Lord's Supper, with Virtues in Welsh on north side. Unusual wooden plaque, originally in Changi camp Singapore, commemorating Welsh members of 77th Regiment, who died while prisoners of war in Java, 1943.
