The Cathedral Church of Ss Peter, Paul, Dyfrig, Teilo & Euddogwy. The beautiful cathedral of Llandaff, the mother church of the Diocese. The foundation dates back to the 6th century 'Age of Saints'; much older than that of any English cathedral! The shrine of St Teilo, brought many pilgrims here up to the time of the Reformation. The present building dates from 1120, under Norman Bishop Urban, anxious to create a rival to Welsh St David's. Carved doorways and chancel arch date from this time, the nave, west front and choir are in a serene Early Gothic. But by the C18, the west towers and roof had collapsed, and John Wood of Bath built a classical 'temple' within the ruins. By 1840, Llandaff recovered its nerve, and brought in local architect John Prichard to restore and rebuild the cathedral, adding a glorious south-west tower and spire. But, in 1941, a landmine brought down the nave roof. The final restoration, by George Pace in the '50's, including, the arch over the eastern nave, carrying Jacob Epstein's figure of Christ -the Majestas.
